Who is more devoted to “order” than to justice?

“I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro’s great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen’s Councilor or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to “order” than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: ‘I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action’ . . . .”

~ Dr. Martin Luther King Jr~
Letters from Birmingham Jail

I’m still in awe of this and how profound the first lines  are. Its shocking when you understand what he’s really proposing… The obvious aggitators like the kkk and other extremist groups where never (and will never) be a threat to civil rights and human equality.

But… The “Fence Sitters” who remained neutral in the name of “order” are the real threat. That remains true today in many other situations of injustice.
